Even the smallest cut or blister on your foot can be a serious issue if you’re a diabetic. Daily foot care helps you avoid complications that can lead to infection and even potential amputation. Diabetes can cause nerve damage in your feet that makes it hard to feel an injury or blister. Plus, you also have reduced blood flow, so injuries heal slowly and infection is more likely.

Most people can prevent serious foot problems by following some simple strategies. Take care of your feet every day to maintain good health and quality of life even with diabetes.

Inspect your feet daily

Make it a habit to look at your feet each day. Look for cuts, blisters, swelling, discoloration, or problems with your nails. A hand mirror can help you see the bottom of your feet.

Manage your diabetes

Wash your feet

Use warm, not hot, water and soap to wash your feet. Be sure to dry them thoroughly, too, to discourage infection. Moisturize them following a washing to prevent cracks caused by dry skin. Just apply the lotion to the tops and bottoms of your feet and the heels, not between your toes.

Care for your toes

Trim your toenails regularly. Go for a straight across pattern and file sharp edges with a nail file to prevent ingrown toenails. Avoid cutting your nails too short.

Keep your feet in shoes

Going barefoot puts you at risk of injury to your feet. Check the inside of your shoes for pebbles or other irritations before you put them on. You might not feel these items due to diabetic nerve damage.

Wear socks, too

Always put on socks as an extra layer of protection. Ask us about socks made specially for diabetics that feature extra cushioning. They also aren’t elastic up top, so you don’t have to worry about reduced circulation. The material they’re made from wicks sweat and moisture, too.

Keep your feet safe from extreme temperatures

Always wear shoes if you’re walking on hot pavement or sand. Keep your feet out of hot water and don’t use heating pads or electric blankets on them. If your feet are cold at night, wear socks to bed. Wear warm socks in cold weather.

Prop up your feet

If you’re seated, place your feet on a stool. Keep moving your feet all day long: Rotate your ankles, wiggle your toes, and point and flex your feet often. Avoid crossing your legs during long sits.

Seek care for foot issues

If you develop corns or calluses, don’t try to deal with them at home. Come to our office to have them resolved.
